Cadillac . How to Install a GM Automatic TransmissionBehind the engine is the automatic transmission in GM rear-wheel drive vehicles. A propeller shaft runs from the output shaft of the transmission to the rear axle, and this shaft delivers power to the rear wheels. You must remove the transmission for internal diagnosis when there is a failure and for re-manufacturing and rebuilding. A GM automatic transmission uses hydraulic fluid and mechanical action to shift gears. This procedure is for installing a transmission in a full-size Chevrolet truck. Difficulty:Moderately Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need Basic set of hand tools Floor jack Jack stands (4) Loctite 16 quarts of DEXRON-III transmission fluid Step by Step : 1 Raise the vehicle with a jack and support both ends of the vehicle on jack stands. Install the torque converter onto the transmission input shaft and use a strap to hold it in place. Place the transmission on the saddle of the floor jack and wheel it into place under the vehicle, with the large end of the bell housing towards the front of the vehicle. 2 Jack the transmission up while installing the dipstick tube. Remove the strap from the torque converter. Slide the transmission into place so that the pins sticking out of the engine block line up with the holes in the transmission case. When the transmission is in completely, the torque converter must spin freely. Thread in the bolt and studs through the bell housing into the back of the engine. 3 Coat the torque converter bolts with Locktite. Install the bolts between the torque converter and flywheel, tightening them to 46 ft.-lbs. Install the converter access plug. Install the transmission vent hose, vehicle fuel lines and the transmission wiring harness. Install the heat shield onto the transmission. Install the shift cable to the ball stud shifter mount. Install the transfer case if so equipped. Install the transfer case wiring harness if so equipped. The transfer case is only present on four-wheel drive vehicles. 4 Install the rear transmission mount, vent hoses, starter motor, drive shafts and exhaust system. Install the transmission mount support onto the vehicle. Remove the jack from under the vehicle. Install the transmission cooler lines after flushing or replacing the cooler. Remove the vehicle from the jack stands and lower it with the jack. Pour the correct amount of DEXRON-III fluid into the dipstick tube per your owner's manual. 5 Start the vehicle and move it through the gear range, letting it run briefly in each gear. This allows the fluid to fill the internal transmission components. 6 Check the transmission fluid level after test-driving the vehicle. Tips & Warnings Be certain that the negative battery cable is disconnected before performing this procedure. Flush the transmission cooler before hooking up the lines and running the vehicle with the new transmission. If the old transmission had a catastrophic failure, consider replacing the transmission cooler. ResourcesGMGoodwrench: Automatic transmission
Cadillac . How to Install a GM Turbo 350 Automatic TransmissionThe Turbo Hydra-Matic 350 was one of General Motor's most commonly used transmissions in the late 1960s. The Turbo 350 was a fully automatic transmission that featured three forward gears. The transmission used a fairly basic design, consisting primarily of a three-element hydraulic torque converter and a simple compound planetary gear set. Like all transmissions, the Turbo 350 eventually needs to be either rebuilt or replaced. The process of installing the transmission is fairly straightforward. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Open-end wrench Socket wrench Flare-nut wrench Jack Transmission fluidRemoving the Transmission Step by Step : 1 Park the vehicle on a level surface. Release the parking brake. 2 Remove the bolts that secure the driveshaft to the front of the differential with an open-end wrench to release the driveshaft. Pull the driveshaft out of the transmission. 3 Turn the integral nut at the tip of the speedometer cable in a counterclockwise direction with an open-end wrench until the nut is loose. Pull the cable out of the transmission. 4 Pull the rubber vacuum line off the vacuum modulator located at the back of the transmission. 5 Turn the integral nut at the tip of each oil cooler pipe in a counterclockwise direction with a flare-nut wrench until the nuts are loose. Pull the pipes off the transmission. 6 Remove the bolt and nut assembly that secures the shift linkage rod to the driver's side of the transmission with a socket wrench, then pull the linkage rod off of the transmission. 7 Support the underside of the transmission with a jack. 8 Remove the bolts that secure the rear transmission mount to the vehicle's frame with a socket wrench. 9 Remove the four bolts that secure the crossmember to the underside of the transmission with a socket wrench. Two bolts are on each end of the crossmember. Step by Step : 10 Remove the converter-to-flex plate bolts located at the front of the transmission with an open-end wrench. Step by Step : 11 Remove the transmission-to-engine bolts with an open-end wrench. Step by Step : 12 Raise the transmission slightly with the jack. Slide the transmission rearward from the engine and lower it away from the vehicle. Installing the Transmission Step by Step : 1 Guide the front of the transmission into the back of the engine with the jack, ensuring that the converter-to-flex plate bolt holes align. 2 Install the transmission-to-engine bolts with an open-end wrench. 3 Install the transmission-to-flex plate bolts with an open-end wrench. 4 Position the crossmember against the underside of the transmission. Install the crossmember's four bolts with a socket wrench. 5 Install the bolts that secure the rear transmission mount to the vehicle's frame with a socket wrench. 6 Install the bolt and nut assembly that secures the shift linkage rod to the driver's side of the transmission with a socket wrench. 7 Position the two oil cooler pipes against the transmission. Rotate the integral nut at the tip of each pipe in a clockwise direction with a flare-nut wrench. 8 Push the rubber vacuum line onto the nipple in the center of the vacuum modulator located at the back of the transmission. 9 Position the speedometer cable into place against the transmission. Rotate the integral nut at the tip of the cable in a clockwise direction with an open-end wrench until the cable is secure. Step by Step : 10 Slide the front of the driveshaft into the back of the transmission. Install and tighten the driveshaft's four retaining bolts with an open-end wrench to secure it to the front of the differential. Step by Step : 11 Pour about 9 quarts of fresh transmission fluid into the transmission's dipstick tube. Step by Step : 12 Start the engine. Allow it to run at a fast idle for about two minutes. Step by Step : 13 Add transmission fluid if necessary. Note that the distance between the "ADD" and full ("F") marks on the transmission's dipstick represents one pint.
